Panel: Epic Sony 74L vs 82L Comparison

Both the Sony Bravia 55-inch 4K smart TVs offer an 8-bit FRC IPS DLED panel, so you must be pondering whether the picture quality, brightness, and saturation will be similar, right? However, the similarities end here. We will discuss the differences in picture quality, brightness, and saturation between the two models with a profound comprehension so that you can make the right decision.

Picture Quality

When we put both Sony Bravia 55-inch 4K smart TVs side-by-side and play similar content, the Sony 82L TV has a softer and more natural colour in contrast to the 74L TV. This difference in colour quality can be attributed to the fact that the Sony 82L TV utilises a broader colour gamut and enhanced colour accuracy technology, resulting in more vibrant and lifelike images.

Additionally, the higher peak brightness level of the Sony 82L TV allows for better visibility in brightly lit environments, further enhancing the overall picture quality compared to the Sony 74L TV.

Brightness

Previously, when we reviewed the Sony X74L 55 inch TV, we didn’t have the applicable equipment to test the brightness level, so the peak brightness of the 74L recorded was 470 nits, but when we tested it with the right equipment again, it was a mere 320 nits maximum brightness. Now, 320 nits of brightness is not considered flawed because it is the overall brightness of the panel.

In fact, when we watch the same content on both the 74L TV and 82L TV, in some scenes, the brightness of the 74L TV looks way more vibrant and livelier than the Sony 82L TV.  The only reason for this to happen is the oversaturation of colours in the Sony X74L 55-inch TV.

Sometimes, an optical illusion occurs when your eyes play with your brain. And this is precisely what it looks like when you watch content with oversaturated colours, especially blue, on TVs with lower brightness. Since our eyes interpret blue light differently, the TV tends to display a tremendous amount of brightness, giving the impression that it is brighter. However, this is an oversaturation and not an accurate representation of the TV’s actual brightness.

During the Sony X82L review, the recorded peak HDR brightness was 470 nits, which is 100 units more than the Sony X74L 55 inch TV. Despite the Sony X82L TV having more brightness, some scenes on the Sony 74L TV were perceived to have more brightness, giving an impression of an optical illusion.

Colour Optimisation

The oversaturation is rarely visible on the Sony X82L 55-inch TV due to its immaculate colour optimisation. Whereas, the Sony X74L 55-inch TV has visible oversaturated colours that interfere with the colour balance and distort the overall picture quality.

For individuals who value precise and natural-looking colours in their viewing wisdom, the X82L is a preferable option due to the difference in colour optimisation between the two models.

Colour Saturation

When we put both TVs side by side for comparison, on the Sony 74L TV, you can see slightly oversaturated colours, making them somewhat punchy and lively. But the question is, are they natural? No, they aren’t. Because when tested in the colour gamut, they replicate 98% of sRGB in the gamut, but the DCI-P3 is 78%.

This means the colour accuracy is 78% out of the box. Rest; all your eyes are going to catch is oversaturation.

However, the oversaturation of the Sony 82L TV is not at all unpleasant to the eyes, which means what you see is an oversaturation of colours, e.g., the blue or green showing in the content is not overtly vibrant or artificial but rather a rich and captivating shade that draws you in and is soothing to the eyes. It adds depth and intensity to the viewing experience. However, they are still oversaturated colours.

Blacks

Now, the blacks of the 82L model are noticeably deeper, more detailed, and more true to life. The shadows in the black are more nuanced in Sony 82L TV. So, does that make the Sony 74L TV any less impressive? Not necessarily. While the blacks may not be as deep and nuanced as the Sony 82L TV model, the Sony 74L TV still offers sharp details in blacks.

HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Again, when we examine the dynamic range of the Sony 74L TV, it is nowhere near as good as the Sony 82L TV. Nevertheless, the million-dollar query is: Is it fair to compare the dynamic range of the Sony 82L TV? No at all; if we compare the Sony 74L TV with any other beginner models, then it’s valid given that, the Sony 74L TV outperforms all other entry-level 55-inch TV models in terms of picture quality, dynamic range, and overall performance.

Regardless, when it comes to comparing the dynamic range of the Sony 82L TV to that of the Sony 74L TV, it is a fool’s play. Because the Sony 82L TV wins hands down. You will see clearer blacks and deeper shadows, and you will see more lit-up content on the Sony 82L TV.

Lo and behold! The TV’s unique features and beauty stem from its superb picture quality, which entrances you with its natural colours.

Viewing Angles

The Sony Bravia 55 inch 4K smart TV, whether it’s the Sony X82L TV or the Sony X74L TV, the viewing angle delivery is breathtaking in both TVs. The seating position won’t hamper your viewing experience, the reason being that the Sony Bravia 55 inch 4K smart TVs utilise advanced technology that gives you wide angles for a better and more enhanced viewing experience.

OTT Performance: Sony 74L vs 82L Comparison

In the Sony 74L vs 82L comparison, when we watched the TV content on the OTT performance, the results were clearly different.

Video Formats

The Sony 82L TV offers Dolby Vision, whereas the Sony 74L TV doesn’t support this video format. Here, the HDR capabilities of a TV play an important role. HDR, or High Dynamic Range, enhances the contrast and colour accuracy of the content displayed on a TV.

Both TVs have good capabilities, but with the support of Dolby Vision, the Sony 82L TV can deliver a more immersive and lifelike viewing experience compared to the Sony 74L TV. This makes the 82L model a better choice for those who prioritise superior HDR performance in their OTT content.

This difference in video formats allows the Sony 82L TV to deliver a more immersive and visually stunning viewing experience, especially for content that is compatible with Dolby Vision technology.

Sony 74L vs 82L: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and YouTube

  1. On Amazon Prime, both TVs did exceptionally well, and the HDR 10 content in Prime Video was a pleasure to watch.
  2. When playing the content on Netflix, the Sony 82L TV showcased vibrant colours, enhanced contrast, and sharper details, thanks to its support for Dolby Vision. On the other hand, the Sony 74L TV may not provide the same level of visual richness and realism.

Therefore, if you are a frequent viewer of Netflix or other streaming platforms, opting for the Sony 82L TV model would significantly enhance your overall experience.
