Toshiba launched its Smart TV range- HD, FULL HD, 4K, and QLED range in India. We had the Toshiba U50 55-inch model with us and we have tested it in every possible way. So how is this new Toshiba TV? Should you buy it? And how do we actually test our TVs? We will answer all your queries in this article. UNBOXING OF TOSHIBA U50- THE BEGINNING

First of all, let’s Unbox Toshiba TV and find out what we get inside the box. You can see the box- you get Toshiba’s U50 model packed in this kind of box and as soon as you open it, the first thing you get on the top is the stands of this TV. After the stands, you get the wall-mount box, which is quite heavy. And then finally you find the TV itself.

“We highly recommend you not to install the TV yourself because this might void/hamper the warranty for your TV, provided by the company.”

In the box you get a User Manual, Warranty Card, Metal Base Stands with Screws, Remote Control with its batteries and along with this, you get a Wall-mount.

COMPLETE SPECIFICATIONS- TOSHIBA U50

In this Toshiba TV, you get 8 Bit + FRC VA DLED panel whose brightness reaches up to 350 to 400 Nits. This TV supports HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision. In this TV you will get CEVO 4K HDR Engine which comes with Ultra Dimming Technology and this TV comes with the VIDAA version OS U3 which will be upgraded to version U4 latest by February 2021. In this TV you will also get an option of Screen Mirroring.

TOSHIBA U50 TV- SCREEN

You get very thin Bezels on the three sides and medium Bezels on the chin in this Toshiba TV. You certainly cannot expect Bezels thinner than this in any other Budget TV. Toshiba claims 3 seconds Fast boot up and let’s tell you, the claim is absolutely perfect. After we tested, we found that this TV boots up within 3 seconds, as claimed by Toshiba.

VIEWING ANGLES- TOSHIBA U50

Now let’s talk about another important aspect- The Viewing Angles.

We played a 4K video on YouTube from the front and it was good. Then we played the same video from the 30-degree angle to check the colors and the Brightness loss. After viewing from the side from a 30-degree Viewing Angle, we saw a 25% loss in colors and Brightness but this is quite understandable because even in some other VA panels, you will witness the same loss. In fact, in many other VA panels, we have seen a loss in color and brightness up to 30% to 50% after viewing them on an angle of 30 degrees.

SCREEN -MIRRORING- TOSHIBA U50

It is easy to mirror your phone screen on this TV. Select screen mirroring from the Input Options then select the ‘Cast’ option on your phone and that’s it. After that, you’ll be able to play your phone’s video on this TV screen very easily.

We also tested the performance of Alexa and we found it quite satisfactory.

TOSHIBA U50- CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS

You get a Fully-Functional Remote Control with Infra-Red and Bluetooth control and you get Hotkeys from Amazon, Amazon Prime, and YouTube. Its bell quality is good.

In this TV you will get 3 HDMI ports out of which 1 HDMI port supports ARC, and you get 2 USB ports and 1 Optical Audio port with 1 Headphone Jack. This Toshiba TV supports Bluetooth 5.0 and Dual Band WIFI connectivity options.

TOSHIBA U50-HOW TO SETUP?

It is easy to set up the TV. All you have to do is select the language and your country, and then after using your WIFI password, you are good to go and use it. Immediately after the Setup, the TV software asks for the credentials of your Netflix account, and we entered our Netflix credentials to test the TV. On the Home Screen of the Toshiba U50 model and you get Youtube, Amazon Prime, Apps, and the Settings apps which you can edit and place, according to your preferences.

If we talk about Applications then you get Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Hungama Play, Yupp TV, Browser, and the Games option but on this TV you don’t get an app store like Google Play Store because this TV is not based on Android OS, rather it is based on VIDAA OS. Right now you don’t get to see much support of many OTT platforms like Jio TV, ZEE5, and Hotstar. Though Toshiba claims that very soon you will be getting the support of these platforms as well.

TESTING THE DOLBY ATMOS AND DOLBY VISION

Folks, in order to check the presence of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, we logged in with the highest plan for Netflix, because in this plan you can play the 4K videos. After pressing the Netflix Hotkey present on the Remote, we checked the Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support. We found that in this TV you get Dolby Vision, which is only available in 4K videos, and along with this, you get a 5.1 Audio Setup.

“We played the movie ‘Extraction’ because it is a movie compatible with Dolby Atmos and even in this, we found the 5.1 Audio Setup.”

Amazon Prime boots up a bit slowly after pressing the Amazon Hotkey. This is a problem that prevails with every TV, even if you are using a firestick. But once the app opens it is pretty Fast and Responsive. Even in Prime Video, you get the support of 4K video, Dolby Vision, and 5.1 Audio. The YouTube app opens quite fast, immediately after pressing the YouTube Hotkey and it is the next level of fun to watch the 4K videos on this TV. It does not matter if you play a FULL HD Video, Music Video, 4K video, or even our YouTube videos, all are amazing. You will see the clarity of SD channels on this TV.

“Though Toshiba is showing the SD channels with its upscaling capability on the 4K screen of this TV, but they do not appear on their best. If you buy a 4K TV then you must buy an SD Set-top box.”

The clarity of HD channels is far better than that of SD channels. Toshiba TV is showing the HD videos on its 4K screen with brilliant upscaling technology.

THE ULTRA- DIMMING TECHNOLOGY TEST

We had absolutely no complaints against the clarity HD channels on this TV because the Toshiba U50 model claims Ultra Dimming technology. How we tested this? We made a white box rotate on the screen which forced its pixels to deteriorate but the performance of this screen was outstanding. Toshiba U50 thus passed our test of Ultra Dimming technology very easily.

THE STRESS TEST OF TOSHIBA U50

Now, let’s stress this TV more in our Stress Test. In this Test, a huge amount of stress is put on TV, and this amount of stress cannot be put from any normal video. And to our surprise, this Toshiba TV performed very well.

“We must remember that the Toshiba TV is not an OLED TV, which after switching off its pixels could produce extra-ordinary Blacks. But despite being a normal LCD TV, its performance is very good. Of course, this is not an OLED TV and it cannot produce Blacks like an OLED TV but in this segment, this is a very good TV.”

Hence we found that the performance of this TV in the Stress test and Diming Test is very good along with its good HDR performance.

TESTING OF 720p, 1080p, and 4K Videos IN TOSHIBA U50

We played a 720p, MP4 video through a Pendrive. We found that Toshiba played this 720p video on this 4K screen brilliantly by Upscaling it.

Then we played the 1080p, FULL HD video in MKV format. We played this video through a Pendrive and once again Toshiba played this video on its 4K screen brilliantly after Upscaling it.

“In case if you were wondering, then yes, you can watch these videos on Full Screen after changing their Aspect Ratio.”

AUDIO TEST- TOSHIBA U50

We also conducted an Audio Test to test the audio quality of the Toshiba U50 TV model. The audio quality was very good. But if you have a big room or if you want a Cinematic Experience then you must play the videos with an External Soundbar.

Folks, we used a 2.1 Soundbar of 180W with a built-in Subwoofer. We connected it to the TV via an Optical Cable. We found that after plugging in a Soundbar or Home Theatre we get a better Audio Experience. We strongly recommend you use a Home Theatre System or a Soundbar for a Cinematic Experience.

WHAT IS OUR OPINION OF THE TOSHIBA U50 TV?

After testing everything that we could and in every possible way, we found that its picture quality is good, Blacks are also good but its Viewing Angles are not that good, and this is an issue with every TV which has a VA panel.

It has a decent Sound Quality which can be enhanced by using a Soundbar.

Now let’s talk about its OS. In ANDROID TV OS you get the Google App store through which you can download many apps. But in this TV you get VIDAA OS and right now, there are not many apps available in it. But that is a problem with Samsung and LG TVs too. If you are interested in buying a TV without Android OS then this Toshiba U50 model along with its other models is the best option in this segment.
