‘Google Penalised With Rs. 392 Crore for Invading Users’ Privacy

Google Penalised With Rs. 392 Crore: Google, Alphabet’s biggest subsidiary, has been penalized for secretly tracking the users’ location unauthoratively. The Google Penalised megabuck of Rs. 392 crore. Eventually, the lawsuit was registered by Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General. He passed the statement settling the lawsuit,

”Our investigation revealed that Google was telling its users one thing – that it would no longer track their location once they opted out – but doing the opposite and continuing to track its users’ movements for its own commercial gain”. “That’s unacceptable, and we’re holding Google accountable.” 

The tech giant agreed to pay the penalty on Monday to resolve the case with 40 US states for misleading the people on convincing them that the location sharing is disabled but was still collecting the data behind the closed door, AFP reported in a press release.

Google also had the say on the same stating that they have already improvised and altered some of the issues mentioned in the settlement details for Google Penalised. Further, in an email to TechCrunch, José Castañeda one of the spokesperson of the tech titan said “Consistent with improvements we’ve made in recent years, we have settled this investigation which was based on outdated product policies that we changed years ago.” 

The Republican and Democratic Legislators is against the national rules on online privacy, and wants changes to make its impact better for Google Penalised. Ellen Rosenblum, Oregon Attorney General also stated that Google should be more specific with its ‘Location Tracking’ policies in 2023. 

Not to mention that Google denied the allegations imposed, yet agreed to work on their policies and pay the fine of Rs. 392 crores, reported by the New York Times. 

Not only this, prior to Oregon’s attorney reports in 2018 saying that Google tracked users’ location without permission. Reuters claim that the Google has been misleading their users since 2014 regarding the Location sharing issue.

Other Similar Cases On Google Penalised

  • In October last year, Arizona filed a case regarding the same Google Penalised issue. Later Google paid Rs. 689 Crore.
  • Google was taken to court by Texas in January 2023, Indiana, Washington State and the District of Columbia for the intrusion of privacy. 
  • Google along with Meta was fined Rs. 503,008,702 by South Korea for secretly collecting personal data of the users’.
